Debbie Goodwin -2010 Kishor M. Kulkarni Distinguished HS Teacher
On behalf of the ASM Materials Education Foundation, the Teacher Award Committee is pleased to announce
the selection of Debbie Goodwin, recipient of the 2010 Kishor M. Kulkarni Distinguished High School Teacher
This award, $2,000 plus $500 recipient’s travel cost to MS&T, was established in 2007 through a generous
donation by Dr. Kishor M. Kulkarni, past trustee of ASM International, and his family to recognize the
accomplishments of one U.S. high school science teacher who has demonstrated a significant and sustained
impact on pre-college age students.
“…Before entering Mrs. Goodwin’s class my sophomore year, I was undecided as to what direction I would be
taking for my life. As the pressure increased to choose a college and a career, I found myself asking that exact
question quite frequently. Discovering material science with Mrs. Goodwin’s help gave me a passion and a goal
for my future. I will be attending Iowa State University in the fall and majoring in material science and
engineering.” Kate Lindley, Graduate, Chillicothe High School
“I have observed and worked with Debbie in the Eisenman Materials Camp, the Houston Teachers Camp,
Columbus Teachers Camps, Master Teachers Training Camps, and the Detroit Annual Meeting student outreach.
In each of these, she has been an effective advocate for the expansion of materials science in the high school
curriculum, persuading by example and using experiments both informative and fun… She is largely responsible
for the teachers camp in Cleveland (now in its third year). The person who volunteered to organize it was
enthused after observing Debbie in a previous camp. Likewise with some of the persons who are now becoming
master teachers. My own teaching (ASMI MEI) has improved through the contact I’ve had with her.” Thomas K.
