Joyce Sanson has been one of our awesome bus drivers at Chillicothe R-II Schools for 27 years! This year, she is driving a town route in Bus 12, but during her tenure with the District, she’s driven country routes in Bus 5, Bus 13 and Bus 20.
Joyce said she likes driving for the District because the schedule is flexible, it offers a good salary and benefits, as well as holidays off, sick leave and extra pay for in-town and out-of-town trips. “The training is free,” she added, “and I’ve got great co-workers. It’s just a great District to work for.”
When we asked Joyce what her favorite part of the job was, she said, “I like getting to see the kids before and after school daily and being able to make sure kids feel comfortable, safe and loved.” She added that she also enjoys seeing the kids growing up year to year.
Joyce explained that she cherishes her memories of driving for the District over the years. “What is really neat about driving a bus as long as I have, is that I’m hauling kids now and I used to haul these same kids’ parents - and the kids are always asking me whether their parents were good on the bus,” she said. Joyce also recalled two students who rode her bus that used to fight all the time to and from school and couldn’t get along. Now, she says, they are married and have three kids. And, she said, while she drives the same routes every day, she said you never know what the day is going to bring. “What is really fun about driving a bus is you’re not sure what the kids are going to tell you from day to day,” Joyce said. “It’s just a joy to get to know the kids.”
Joyce was born and raised in Chillicothe. She graduated from Chillicothe in 1982 and enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
