One of our Hornet Hives at the Chillicothe R-II Administrative Offices is now sporting a basketball net that was removed from the goal at the Chillicothe High School Auditorium on February 20, 1976 - the night that the last game was played there. Unfortunately, Chillicothe lost the game to Columbia Rock Bridge 69-54. According to CHS Alumni Brent Turner, who donated the item, the auditorium was an “awesome place to play – a real snake pit.”
Brent Turner said that before the advent of no smoking in public buildings, everyone would show great courtesy by moving to the school hallways to smoke. He added, “Second hand smoke was not a big health concern in the 70s and many times, we could not see everyone in the upper deck since the cloud of smoke obstructed the view.”
Turner also said that the auditorium’s playing floor was not level and the basketball, if placed in the middle of the court, would roll off the stage and into the crowd.
We love this new addition! Anyone who has any Chillicothe R-II memorabilia that they would be interested in donating for display at the Administrative Offices are urged to drop the items off between the hours of 8 AM and 4 PM, Monday through Friday.
